Softball Splits with Randolph

Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith softball team retook their home field as Randolph College visited on Sunday. The Wildcats and Avenging Angels split with Randolph taking game one 8-4 and Meredith taking game two 7-5.

Game 1: Randolph 8, Meredith 4

The Wildcats got on the board early knocking in three runs each in the first and second innings. Meredith would put together a late charge getting two in the bottom of the third. Randolph would take the 8-4 victory in game one. Highlights included doubles by Emily Cooke and Arielle Stout. Stout had three hits and three RBIs in the game.

Game 2: Meredith 7, Randolph 5

The second game saw Randolph score one in the top of the first but then the Avenging Angels brought the power as Cooke led the bottom of the inning off with a home run to left field. Kristin Piner doubled to left field scoring Leah Friedman and gave Meredith the 2-1 lead.

The bottom of the third saw more run production. Friedman singled on a bunt then Stout homered to center field to give Meredith the 4-1 advantage. Randolph answered in the top of the fifth, pushing three runs across the plate and drawing Meredith tied at 4-all. That did not last for long as Meredith tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning as Stout doubled to score Friedman again.

Meredith continued to hold the 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Avenging Angels would gain two more runs as Emily Cooke hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Jordan Zachmeyer and Carrie Webster singled to score pinch runner Bryana Bass.

Randolph would lead one last charge in the bottom of the seventh inning as Tianna Strassner singled to shortstop to score Gina Pagano. Meredith pitcher Jessica Dzeskewicz was able to have the Wildcats ground out for the last out and take the win. Dzeskewicz pitched a complete game, striking out four, giving up 11 hits and facing 39 batters.
